Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things

In Cradle to Cradle, McDonough and Braungart argue that the conflict between industry and the environment is not an indictment of commerce but an outgrowth of purely opportunistic design. The design of products and manufacturing systems growing out of the Industrial Revolution reflected the spirit of the day-and yielded a host of unintended yet tragic consequences.

Recycling with No Waste at all is possible if products are well designed. This also means that there should be no degrading of quality if parts are reused in other products. The idea is that this is what nature does herself. Everything in nature that dies becomes a prime quality source for other life. There is no waste in nature. Everything is re-used.

Important principles in this thinking are:
  • Waste equals food: To make this work, biological en and technical chains must be kept separate, because they pollute or degrade each other.
  • Downcycling: is the term used for often used but the wrong kind of recycling. For instance the reuse of newspapers and plastic only gives it a second life. Because the new products are of inferior material it only leads to leaking toxic substances in the environment. After that it is still trashed. So it only postpones but does not create a closed cycle.

Cradle to Cradle was enthusiastically received by many designers.
